On Saturdays 13 and 27 August, the READ OUTSIDE evenings take place in the open air!

On Saturday 27 August our UITGELEZEN-evening takes place in the open air! Regular panel members Fien Sabbe and Anna Luyten and our new written & spoken word programmer Sarah Bekambo take their guests to the Bijloke site to exchange the most adventurous book tips of the moment. In between, a musician will provide a well-sounding intermezzo. Food for literary wolverines and aficionados of the linen back!

Together with special guest Wim Opbrouck they talk about the new book Mungo by Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart, an overwhelming book in which the author of Shuggie Bain once again shows his literary class. Then comes Breasts and Eggs by literary phenomenon Mieko Kawakami, a breathtaking book according to bestselling author Haruki Murakami.

Furthermore, they will discuss Wim Opbrouck's double debut: Het lied van de bultrug en Hij wist het niet. During the interludes, Kapinga Gysel will provide a touch of soul. With the Room 13 Orchestra, she brought Amy Winehouse's legendary record Back to Black back to life in her own way.

Douglas Stuart - Mungo

Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in the hyper-masculine and dangerous suburbs of Glasgow. They should be enemies but their friendship slowly turns into love. Mungo must do everything to keep this true love a secret - especially from his older brother Hamish, a ruthless gang leader. Then Mungo's mother sends him on a camping trip with two strangers that changes his life forever. Will he find the courage and strength to return and is there a future for Mungo with James?

Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart spent five years writing Mungo, the worthy successor to bestseller Shuggie Bain. As well as being a vivid portrait of working class life, Stuart's new novel is a deeply moving story of the dangerous first love of two young men.

"The author of Shuggie Bain once again shows his literary class. A great book."

Mieko Kawakami - Breasts and Eggs

On a hot summer day in Tokyo we meet three women: thirty-year-old Natsuko, her older sister Makiko and Makiko's teenage daughter Midoriko. Makiko is considering having her breasts enlarged in Tokyo, her daughter has recently stopped talking and is struggling with herself and her changing body as a young woman. Eight years later, we meet Natsuko again. While she should be writing her long-awaited second novel, she cherishes the desire to become a mother. As a single woman, she is forced to explore alternative methods of getting pregnant: from international sperm donation to making illegal arrangements with shadowy donors in her own country.

The Japanese Mieko Kawakami is a literary phenomenon in her own country. In recent years, she also broke through internationally with her book Breasts and Eggs. The English translation was on the New York Times bestseller list and was chosen by TIME and others as one of the best books of the year.

"I will never forget the feeling of pure wonder I had when I first read Mieko Kawakami's Breasts and Eggs."
- Haruki Murakami
